The narrative revolves around Shivani Shivaji Roy, a policewoman whose interest in the case of a kidnapped teenage girls leads her to uncover secrets of human trafficking by the Indian mafia. [5] Released theatrically on 22 August 2014, the film received positive reviews, with praise for Mukerji's performance, and emerged a commercial success. It was followed by a sequel titled Mardaani 2 in 2019. Plot [ edit] Shivani Shivaji Roy ( Rani Mukerji), a dedicated Crime Branch Inspector of the Mumbai Police, chases a Delhi -based kingpin, Karan Rastogi ( Tahir Raj Bhasin), who runs an organised crime cartel involving child trafficking and drugs. She aims to arrest him and rescue Pyaari, a teenage orphan who is kidnapped by Rastogi's men. Previously Shivani had saved Pyaari from her uncle, who wanted to sell her, and had since begun taking care of her like a daughter. Shivani takes the task personally, going beyond her job and duties to nab Karan and save Pyaari. Karan coming to know that Shivani is continually monitoring his cartel's activities, phones her, warning her not to interrupt his business activities. Determined to catch him, Shivani uses intelligence inputs to track down his associate in Mumbai, who leads her to Karan's close aide, Wakeel, in Delhi. Karan, angered by Shivani, makes sure that Pyaari is sold and sexually abused every single day. As a primary warning, he spreads a fake news that Shivani's husband has been misusing his profession as a doctor to molest and rape an innocent female patient, and he is thrown off duty. When Shivani resumes to trail Karan, he dismembers one of Pyaari's fingers and sends it to Shivani's house wrapped in a gift box. Shivani travels to Delhi and sets up a trap involving decoy drug dealers from Nigeria, who pretend to offer very expensive rare South American cocaine to Karan and Wakeel. As the decoy drug dealers are negotiating the deal with Wakeel, Shivani barges in with other police officers and intercepts the area. While Karan escapes, Wakeel, realising that he'll be arrested no matter what, which means that the police would interrogate him and eventually capture Karan, tries to erase evidence by destroying his mobile phone's SIM card, and then shooting himself. Shivani's continued investigation and the information from her sources leads her to Karan's house, where Karan's mother sedates her. Shivani is abducted and brought to a party organised by Karan. There, she meets Pyaari, where she and the other girls are forced to work as prostitutes. Shivani single handedly confronts the situation, forcing Karan into a small room and rescuing the girls. She challenges Karan to fight her when he teases her for being a woman and beats him. Feeling that he might escape the law, given the corrupt police and judicial system, she hands Karan over to the girls, who beat him to death. His other gang members are arrested and prosecuted. [9] It was speculated that her role was inspired by IPS officer Meera Borwankar, who was also an investigation officer in the Mumbai 26/11 case. Rani Mukerji is absolutely superb. She is giving one after another fab performances. I got goosebumps in the end when she was doing what has to be done at that moment. I was stunned by the vibes at the end of the film. Some viewers were clapping and that surely was sudden. Because this film has the perfect ending. After hearing so many news of rapes and murders, this type of end captures your soul from the left, right and centre.
Kudos to the team. To the writer and director, for such an engaging story. Though, I must write that this film could have been made extremely well. Few scenes could have added so much depth for sure. Also, This film is a must watch. For all Indians. Just like a little bit in first half could make it cult.
I like that background tune. It was fantastic. Loved all twists and turns throughout the run. You will never feel low at any moment. Breaking of fourth wall for the rapist character was something like never before. We were into that bad man's ill mind just because of that.
On the whole, Mardaani 2 is surely a must watch. It will play with your sensibility and mentality nicely. Wait for the vibrant end to catch you. And let's hope for the better change in the world.
